New publication on energy consumption of cryptocurrencies

Research, Aktuelles |

One of our affiliated research teams with MIT has published a paper on the energy consumption of cryptocurrencies, showing how energy-intensive digitalisation can be. Ulrich Gallersdörfer, Lena Klaaßen and Christian Stoll's paper has been recently published in Joule.

We congratulate the interdisciplinary research team of TUM and MIT, Ulrich Gallersdörfer, Lena Klaaßen and Christian Stoll, for their new publication of the energy consumption of cryptocurrencies in Joule.

The paper explores the energy demand of cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin, mainly caused by the mining process. They find that even though other cryptocurrencies are not as mainstream as Bitcoin, they still cumulatively add as much as 50% of Bitcoins energy consumption to the total energy demand of cryptocurrencies.
