Prof. Dr. Johannes Sauer holds keynote seminar on the Economics of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus at the Institute of National Planning in Egypt
His presentation highlighted the multiple and connected challenges that arise when water, energy, food production, and ecosystem health are managed in isolation rather than as interdependent systems. This integrated perspective is particularly relevant for Egypt, where a rapidly growing population, increasing water scarcity, and heavy reliance on the Nile place mounting pressure on agriculture, energy supply, and natural resources alike. By combining economic analysis with a nexus approach, policymakers can better identify trade-offs and synergies, and design strategies that support sustainable development and long-term resilience.
We thank our partners at the INP, in particular Prof. Fadi Abdelradi, for the kind invitation, and we hope this to be the start of fruitful future collaborations.
The TUM PuR Delegation also had the opportunity to visit the Egyptian project site of the SCALARE project. In this PRIMA-funded project, TUM PuR collaborates with Cairo University (among others) seeking to better understand the potential of agroforestry for increasing resilience of farmers in the broader Mediterranean region.
