Dr. Mengie’s research focuses on cluster agriculture, an institutional arrangement in which smallholder farmers with adjacent plots coordinate their agricultural production and resource use. By enabling joint access to inputs, improving coordination, and strengthening market participation, cluster agriculture has the potential to enhance productivity, commercialization, and rural livelihoods, particularly in developing countries.
While previous research has documented positive socioeconomic impacts of cluster farming, important questions remain regarding its environmental implications. In particular, cluster agriculture may alter production patterns in ways that affect crop diversity, input use intensity, and ecological sustainability. Dr. Mengie’s research addresses this critical gap by examining the environmental sustainability outcomes associated with cluster farming systems.
As part of his research project, Dr. Mengie will collect and analyze original household-level data from Ethiopia. This work will provide new empirical insights into the economic and ecological effects of cluster agriculture and contribute to the development of evidence-based policy recommendations to support sustainable agricultural development.
The Chair is honored to host Dr. Mengie under the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s prestigious research fellowship program and looks forward to his contributions to ongoing research activities and academic exchange.
